PROJECT UPDATE - AUGUST 9, 2017

This past July the Tahoe Rim Trail Association headed out into Desolation Wilderness with nine youth campers (ages 12-14) from the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe for a three night/four day backpacking adventure. While many of these local youth reside within 30 minutes of Desolation Wilderness (one of the most visited wilderness lands in the country) most have never been to before. Finding snow free trails in mid-July was a bit challenging but the group was able to set up camp at one of the few non-frozen lakes, Tamarack Lake and day hiked to nearby meadows to study the local Tahoe ecology. Fortunately, timing worked well as fire season has been in full swing. Just before the Tahoe Basin became engulfed with smoke from the recent Detwiler Fire the group departed.

Many campers come into these camps with little knowledge of backpacking basics but walk away skilled on how to navigate and read a map, cook food in the backcountry, set up a tent, how to pack a pack, and important stewardship skills such as Leave No Trace. All gear, food, and supplies are provided, campers only need to bring their shoes, clothes, and a passion for the outdoors!

All participants were able to attend at no cost thanks to generous grant and scholarship support. Parks Project specifically has been able to provide 7 children scholarships through the sales of our apparel! A huge thank you to all of our customers for their support!
