The Bortle Scale measures the darkness of night skies and ranges from Class 1 (pristine, dark skies) to Class 9 (inner-city light pollution). This helps astronomers and stargazers understand how much light pollution affects visibility of stars, planets, and celestial events.
What you can do to help reduce light pollution:
- Swap out bright lights for reflective gear
- Prep camp before dark & skip the decorative camp lights
- Avoid using car headlights at your campsite
- Use red, amber, or yellow light/headlamps instead of bright white light
- Turn off outdoor lights when not in use
