Why Light Pollution Matters?
Ever looked up and seen the Milky Way? Most people can’t—because of light pollution. The Bortle Scale measures the darkness of night skies and ranges from Class 1 (pristine, dark skies) to Class 9 (inner-city light pollution). This helps astronomers and stargazers understand how much light pollution affects visibility of stars, planets, and celestial events.
What you can do to help reduce light pollution:
- Swap out bright lights for reflective gear
- Prep camp before dark & skip the decorative camp lights
- Avoid using car headlights at your campsite
- Use red, amber, or yellow light/headlamps instead of bright white light
- Turn off outdoor lights when not in use
Too much artificial light doesn't just block our view of the stars—it affects wildlife, ecosystems, and human health. Small changes = big impact, help Leave It Better™!
